Full installation needs on-site forming equipment and correct slope over the whole run. Getting the pitch wrong means standing water and a system that fails early. This is worth hiring out even at one storey.

Indicative planning figures only, based on national averages. They are not a quote, they do not account for your specific roof, access or local labour rates, and no contractor is bound by them. Use them to sanity-check a quote, not to replace one. How these numbers are built

Doing it yourself

What is genuinely DIY, and what is not

We would rather tell you the truth than sell you a job you do not need — or let you attempt one you should not.

Reasonable to do yourself

  • Clearing a single-storey gutter you can reach safely from stable ground
  • Adding a downspout extension or splash block
  • Resealing one leaking corner with gutter sealant
  • Tightening or replacing a few loose hangers at ground-floor level
  • Flushing a downspout with a hose

Hire this out

  • Anything on a two-storey or taller home
  • Full installation — it needs on-site forming and correct slope across the whole run
  • Any fascia repair, because the roof edge is structural and hidden rot spreads
  • Steep roof pitches, or any work from the roof rather than a ladder
  • Ice removal in winter, which is how people fall and how shingles get destroyed

A word on ladders. Gutter work is the single most common cause of serious DIY injury, because it puts you at the edge of the roof with your arms extended and your weight off-centre — the exact position ladders are least stable in. If the ground is soft or uneven, if you are working alone, or if you are above one storey, the few hundred dollars is genuinely worth it.

Questions

About these numbers

How accurate is this calculator?

It gives a planning range based on national averages, and it is deliberately wide because real quotes genuinely vary that much. Use it to tell whether a quote is reasonable, not to replace getting one. Anything outside the range is worth asking about — in either direction.

Why does the DIY figure include my time?

Because leaving it out would be misleading. A calculator showing "$200 DIY vs $2,400 to hire" ignores two days on a ladder and the equipment to do it properly. Most people, once they see the hours, decide the gap is smaller than they assumed.

Should I really not DIY a two-storey job?

Really. Falls from height are the leading cause of serious home-improvement injury in Canada, and gutter work puts you at the very edge of the roof with your arms extended — the worst possible ladder position. The saving is not worth it.

What makes quotes differ so much?

Four things, mostly: the gauge and profile of the material, how many downspouts are included, whether removal and disposal of the old system is in the price, and what happens if rotten fascia turns up underneath. Compare those line by line before comparing the totals.
